Bean Binoculars Incident

Soybean Stem Canker

Issue: Pathogen

Scouted in Camden County, NC on October 25th, 2024

Soybean Stem Canker

Details:

Areas of plant death, dieback, and non-uniform stand were observed in widespread sporadic patches across a field at the R8 (full maturity) growth stage. During harvest, yield was significantly lower in these areas. The issue was confirmed to be Soybean Stem Canker. Other symptoms include reddish-brown lesions on the main stem at the base of a lower stem, small black spots that appear on dead tissue, and dead leaves that remain attached to the stem.

Conclusion:

There are no management options for this season, but planting resistant varieties and rotating with non-host crops such as corn or wheat can help manage future issues.
