Details:

Soybeans at the R3 (beginning pod) growth stage were scouted to have defoliation damage due to insects. https://www.clemson.edu/extension/agronomy/_files/soybean-production-guide.pdf

Conclusion:

In this case, defoliation is approaching an economic threshold of 15% during reproductive growth stages. Insects were present and treatment is warranted. South Carolina growers can find more information in the 2023 SC Soybean Production Guide linked here,  starting on page 49.
