Bean Binoculars Incident

False Chinch Bugs

Issue: Insects, Mites, and Slugs

Scouted in Stokes County, NC on July 11th, 2024

False Chinch Bugs

Details:

False chinch bugs were scouted in V3 (third trifoliate) soybeans. At the time of scouting, levels were observed to be at or above the threshold. This field of soybeans is a double crop, having been planted behind canola.

Conclusion:

False chinch bugs are generally observed infesting fields in large patches. They are often mistaken for chinch bugs, hence the name. False chinch bugs will feed on soybeans if their preferred host is killed and in this case they moved off of the canola crop onto the soybeans. They generally disperse after a few days, causing little to no damage. In large numbers, false chinch bugs can be alarming.
