Lodging

Details:

Soybeans at the R8 (full maturity) growth stage were found to be lodged. Lodging has been a problem in some varieties, and not others due to high winds from recent storms, including Hurricane Helene. Lodging caused very late in the season is not expected to cause tremendous yield losses, as long as the combine can reach the pods.

Conclusion:

Reduce speeds when harvesting lodged soybean plants to allow the combine to collect as many beans as possible. Use data collected from university trials to select varieties with little to no history of lodging.
