Bean Binoculars Incident

Soybean Vein Necrosis Virus

Issue: Pathogen

Scouted in Person County, NC on September 9th, 2024

Soybean Vein Necrosis Virus

Details:

Soybeans were scouted at the R6 (full seed) growth stage and symptoms of wilt, dieback, and necrotic lesions along with vein discoloration were observed on leaves in widespread patches across the field. The NC State Plant, Disease and Insect Clinic confirmed that the issue was Soybean Vein Necrosis Virus (SVNV). Symptoms associated with SVNV can look similar to other soybean diseases such as brown spot, cercospora leaf blight, and even herbicide injury. Symptomology can include randomly distributed irregular yellow spots ranging in size, necrotic lesions, vein discoloration, and yellowing of the underside of leaves.

Conclusion:

Currently, there are no economically feasible remedial measures for SVNV.
